Pulmonary Rehabilitation Unit
  • Ventilator Rehabilitation - Active and aggressive therapeutic interventions for patients who have been unable to be weaned from ventilator support but have the potential to achieve this goal
  • Ventilator Management - Evaluation and support to reduce dependence on technological assistance and to improve quality of life
  • Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation - Nocturnal ventilatory support for patients with chronic hypoventilation or respiratory insufficiency due to COPD, neuromuscular disease, or chest wall deformities
  • Arterial Blood Gas Laboratory Services
  • Pulmonary Function Testing Services
  • Diagnostic Laryngotracheoscopy - for evaluation and monitoring airway integrity
Ventilator-assisted patients are provided state-of-the-art technology that enhances both safety and ventilator weaning potential. Adaptations to the ventilator system are frequently made, promoting patient communication and mobility for clinical and social activities away from bedside.

COMMON APPROPRIATE PRESENTING DIAGNOSES
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, e.g., asthma, bronchitis, emphysema
  • Restrictive lung and chest wall diseases
  • Respiratory insufficiency secondary to prolonged medical and/or surgical illness
  • Neuromuscular disease
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury

ADMISSION CRITERIA
  • Medical condition does not warrant telemetry
  • Potential to benefit from medical and physical rehabilitation
  • Patient motivation and/or family support to achieve pre-admission goals and objectives
