Unit
»10 bed, voluntary admission, delayed-egress
unit for patients with moderate to severe psychiatric/behavioral
disorders resulting from:
- Dementia or Delirium
- Neurologic Accident or Injury (Traumatic or Closed Head Injury)
- Stroke or other Neurologic Disease
- Primary Psychiatric or Behavioral Disturbance
» Structured day program with focus on
Cognitive Rehabilitation, Behavior Management, Stress Management,
and the development of adaptive coping skills
» Comprehensive in-house rehabilitation services (Physiatry,
PT, OT, Neuropsychology, Speech, Recreation)
» Unit Level System - A system to provide ongoing clinical
review of acuity and behavior risk and a structured format for
patient's access to increased levels of privilege
» Video monitoring capability to cover all patients' rooms
and treatment areas as needed
» Twice weekly Neuropsychiatric/Psychopharmacological reviews
of all patients
» Computerized Behavior Data Management System with data
collection by all disciplines across all treatment environments
» Behaviorally trained nursing and behavior specialist staff
on all shifts
» All unit and rehabilitation staff certified in behavior
and crisis management through center's Care and Safety program
» Individualized Point System - Token Economy used to enhance
motivation, and reward efforts toward active rehabilitation
» Individualized Behavior Response Plans/Contracts - Detailed
behavior intervention plans developed together with family/caregivers
and designed to maximize program consistency
» Community re-entry programming and placement coordination
including home evaluation
» Comprehensive Outpatient Services to provide a continuum
of care and support for successful community transition.

» Ventilator Rehabilitation - Active and
aggressive therapeutic interventions for patients who have been
unable to be weaned from ventilator support but have the potential
to achieve this goal
» Ventilator Management - Evaluation and support to reduce
dependence on technological assistance and to improve quality
of life
» Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation - Nocturnal
ventilatory support for patients with chronic hypoventilation
or respiratory insufficiency due to COPD, neuromuscular disease,
or chest wall deformities
» Arterial Blood Gas Laboratory Services
» Pulmonary Function Testing Services
» Diagnostic Laryngotracheoscopy - for evaluation and monitoring
airway integrity
Ventilator-assisted patients are provided state-of-the-art
technology that enhances both safety and ventilator weaning potential.
Adaptations to the ventilator system are frequently made, promoting
patient communication and mobility for clinical and social activities
away from bedside.
COMMON APPROPRIATE PRESENTING DIAGNOSES
» Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,
e.g., asthma, bronchitis, emphysema
» Restrictive lung and chest wall diseases
» Respiratory insufficiency secondary to prolonged medical
and/or surgical illness
» Neuromuscular disease
» Traumatic brain injury
» Spinal cord injury
ADMISSION CRITERIA
» Medical condition does not warrant telemetry
» Potential to benefit from medical and physical rehabilitation
» Patient motivation and/or family support to achieve pre-admission
goals and objectives
